uPVC door lock faults: what each symptom usually means.
A uPVC multipoint lock has a central gearbox, shoot bolts, hooks, rollers and a cylinder, all working together. The symptom points to the fault: a handle that has dropped and will not lift, a door that will not lock from outside, a door that locks but will not open, or a key that turns with nothing engaging.
The gearbox is a frequent culprit. It moves each time the handle is used, and it can wear or break. It can usually be replaced without changing the cylinder or the door frame. The engineer gives the time estimate before starting and flags any part that needs ordering before work begins.
A dropped door is another cause. If it has sagged on its hinges, the hooks and rollers do not meet the keeps correctly, which strains the mechanism. The engineer can adjust the hinges and keeps, since a new gearbox on a misaligned door may not cure the fault.
Cylinders matter too. Lock snapping is one of the most common ways burglars attack uPVC doors, and a standard euro cylinder can be snapped in under 30 seconds. A TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder can be fitted during the same visit.
