What this actually involves

When to change a lock — and which one to put in.

The most common reasons people call us for a lock change: moved into a new property, recent break-in or attempted break-in, relationship ended and a key needs cancelling, or the current lock is simply old and failing. All straightforward. The question that matters more is what to replace it with.

Most front doors in the UK have a cylinder lock — either a standard euro cylinder or an older oval profile. If yours is a standard cylinder from before 2015 or so, there’s a fair chance it’s vulnerable to lock snapping, which is how most domestic burglaries are done. A TS007 3-star anti-snap cylinder costs around £89 supplied and fitted and stops that completely.

Insurance is the other consideration. Most home contents policies require a BS3621 5-lever mortice deadlock on the front door for the policy to be valid. A surprising number of homes don’t have one. We’ll check what you’ve got and tell you if your current setup meets your insurer’s requirements — because a lock that doesn’t meet spec means a claim that gets denied.

The job itself usually takes 30-60 minutes depending on the lock type and door condition. We carry most common cylinders and mortice locks as stock, so there’s no waiting for parts on the standard jobs.

Why customers choose us

  • We check your insurance requirement

We’ll tell you if your current or proposed lock meets your policy’s stated spec, before you fit something that invalidates your cover.

  • Parts in the van

We carry BS3621 mortice locks and TS007 anti-snap cylinders as standard stock. Most lock changes are done same visit, no waiting.

  • Honest recommendation

If your existing lock is fine and just needs re-keying, we’ll say so. We won’t replace something that doesn’t need replacing.

  • DBS-checked engineers

Every engineer is DBS checked and carries ID. Not sub-contracted.

  • 12-month warranty

On every lock and part fitted. If it fails within a year, we fix it free.

Common questions

About lock change.

If you've just moved in, you need a lock change — you don't know how many key copies are out there. If it's a relationship issue or a lost key with no risk of someone knowing your address, re-keying can work. We'll advise on the call.

On a UPVC door, you're almost always just changing the cylinder (the barrel the key goes into) rather than the whole multipoint mechanism. On a timber door with a mortice lock, the lock body itself gets replaced. We'll tell you which applies to your door.

Most UK home contents policies require at minimum a BS3621 5-lever mortice deadlock on the main front door. Some also specify a British Standard cylinder. Check your policy schedule — it will list the requirement, usually under "locks" or "security conditions." We can fit to spec.

Standard cylinder change: 30-45 minutes. Mortice lock replacement: 45-75 minutes. UPVC multipoint lock (if the whole mechanism needs going): 60-90 minutes. We'll give you a more accurate estimate once we know what door and lock type you have.

If you're a tenant, you need landlord permission to change locks unless it's an emergency situation (domestic violence, for instance). Landlords can legally change locks between tenancies. We carry out a lot of tenancy-change lock work — we can provide VAT receipts for your records.

Timber, UPVC, composite, aluminium — yes to all. Period properties with Victorian mortice arrangements take slightly longer but we carry specialist stock for those too.
